DIFFERENT  TYPES  OF  ISO  AND  THEIR  SUITABILITY

ISO 9001

ISO 9001:2008 is the international standard for the Quality Management System. This standard is intended for establishing quality throughout the organization at various levels. Upon installation of the Quality Management System your organization can demonstrate the ability to provide consistently, product that meets customer and applicable regulatory requirements.  It is suitable for all types of organizations . ISO 9001 covers QUALITY systems & procedures within the organization to ultimately satisfy the customers. Finance & accounts are outside its scope and there is more emphasis on quality services to customers. It talks about Quality policy, objectives, quality management system, control of records, continuous improvements, corrective & preventive steps to remove non-compliances, internal-audit to ensure systems & procedures are being followed, monitoring, improvement & analysis of services & products, systems etc. It aims towards customers’ loyalty, repeat orders and recommendations to other customers thereby increasing sales & profits.

ISO 14001

ISO 14001 is the internationally recognized standard for the environmental management of businesses. It is a standard intended to encourage organizations to systematically address the environmental impacts of their activities. It prescribes controls for those activities that have an effect on the environment. These include the use of natural resources, handling and treatment of waste and energy consumption. Implementing an Environmental Management System is a systematic way to discover and control the effects your company has on the environment. The ISO 14000 environmental management standards exist to help organizations minimize how their operations negatively affect the environment. In structure it is similar to 9001 quality management and both can be implemented side by side in a company.

OHSAS 18001

This OHSAS Standard specifies requirements for an Occupational Health & Safety management system to enable an organization to develop and implement a policy and objectives which take into account legal requirements and information about Occupational Health & Safety risks. It is intended to apply to all types and sizes of organizations and to accommodate diverse geographical, cultural and social conditions. Based on the British Standard BS 8800, OHSAS 18000 was developed by a group of standard bodies, certification bodies, registrars, and consultants and was first published in 1999. It is not an ISO standard. Although the OHSAS 18000 standards were not developed through the “ISO”, or using the ISO consensus process, they have gained wide acceptance. In 2002, amendments were made to standards to consider user demands and better align these standards with ISO14001 and ISO9001. It can also be integrated with ISO 9000 and ISO 14000 seamlessly.

ISO 22000 / HACCP

It is a management system in which food safety is addressed through the analysis and control of biological, chemical, and physical hazards from raw material production, procurement and handling, to manufacturing, distribution and consumption of the finished product. It is designed for use in all segments of the food industry from growing, harvesting, processing, manufacturing, distributing, and merchandising to preparing food for consumption.

ISO 27001

This Standard has been established to focus on Information Security.  It expalins how effectively the processes are controlled to esnure the total information security throughout the organisation.  It is suitable for IT Companies, Banking, Government Sectors and the companies which have Warehousing Managemement.

CERTIFICATION

ISO authorities are located in Geneva, Switzerland since 1947 and do not certify organizations themselves. There are three separate bodies involved in ISO certification:-

  • Accreditation Bodies  (Auditor of Auditors.  They issue  the ISO Certificate and control/audit Certification Bodies),
  • Certification Bodies   (Auditors. They audit your company and their recommendation to Accreditation Bodies assures ISO Certificate) ,
  • ISO Consultants  (Assist,Educate, Prepare & Train you for ISO compliances to get the audit done from Certification Bodies).

Many countries have formed accreditation bodies which in turn authorize certification bodies to do this job.  The accreditation bodies, the certification bodies and the Consultancy firms charge fees for their services. These certificates are accepted world-wide.
The organization that applies for ISO certification is assessed based on the basis of it’s documented procedures, systems, manual etc. An ISO certificate is not a once-and-for-all award, but must be renewed at regular intervals recommended by the certification body, usually three years. In addition there is an annual Surveillance-audit conducted by Certification Body to ensure you are continuously complying with “ISO” requirements.

WHAT IS ACCREDITATION ?

Accreditation Bodies verify the certification-body’s  competence. To fulfill the accreditation criteria, an accrediting authority assesses the certification body. This is to verify that the certification body complies with existing requirements. This is the authorities’ way of auditing the auditors. ISO  AUDITING

Two types of auditing are required under ISO : auditing by an external certification body (external audit) and audits by internal staff trained for this process (internal audits). The aim is a continual review and assessment. External audits are generally conducted once in a year by Certification auditors whereas internal audits could be conducted by your staff ( at the discretion of your management) two / three / four  times in a year.
